Busy Weekend for the Etta Express
The Marietta Men’s baseball team was busy this weekend as they played a doubleheader on Saturday and then played again Sunday. The doubleheader Saturday was against OAC rival Capital University at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers swept both games, 11-0 and 6-2. In each game the Pios saw their pitchers go the full nine innings. In the first game senior Evan Brockmeier allowed just five hits and no runs. In the second game freshman Mike Finlan went the distance to get his first career win as a Pio, allowing only two runs in the game. Sunday was a different story for the Pios as they traveled to Washington, Pennsylvania to take on the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents. The Presidents came back from a nine run deficit to defeat the Pios. Catcher Ronny Peirish hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to win 11-10. This was the Presidents’ first win over the Pios since 1895.
NCAA Tournament Championship
It ends tonight, and I’m not talking about the All American Reject song, I’m talking about the division one men’s college basketball season. Tonight at 9:23 pm eastern time, the Michigan Wolverines will take on the Louisville Cardinals in the championship game of the NCAA Tournament. Both teams had close games in the quarterfinals. Michigan beat Syracuse and Louisville beat Wichita State. The game will match two of the best point guards in the land against each other, National Player of the Year Trey Burke of the Wolverines and Peyton Siva of the Cardinals. With a Cardinal win tonight, Rick Pitino will become the first coach to win a National Championship at two different schools, his first was with Kentucky in 1996.
Don Schaly To Be Enshrined in the College Baseball Hall of Fame
Former Marietta College baseball coaching legend Don Schaly is headed to the College Baseball Hall Fame. Schaly is the winningest college baseball coach of all time, at any division, with a career coaching win percentage of .814. Schaly coached the Pioneers from 1964 to 2003. In that time he coached three Division 3 National Championship teams, seven runner-ups, and numerous regional and conference champions. He was named the National Coach of the Year four times and was named the Coach of the Century by Collegiate Baseball in 2000. Schaly passed away in March 2005 after a short fight with cancer. His number 50 is the only one to be retired by Marietta College and the stadium where the Pioneers play is also named after him.
United States Senator Joe Manchin, from West Virginia, finds himself in a legal battle with one of his brothers. Manchin’s brother is suing him and another brother, Roch Manchin, for failing to repay a 1-point-7 million dollar loan. The loan was meant to keep the family’s carpet business up and running. On Friday Senator Manchin and his brother filed a response to the lawsuit and are seeking a dismissal of the case. The filed response claims that the loan is false and that there is no proof Senator Manchin put any capital or funding towards a family business. The response goes on to categorize the lawsuit as quote “nothing but the latest effort of a bitter sibling who is in a dire financial condition” end quote. Senator Manchin is the former governor of West Virginia.
It’s been roughly two months since Lake Erie algae contaminated Toledo’s drinking water and its Mayor D. Michael Collins is taking steps to prevent it from happening again. Mayor Collins traveled to Chicago for a Great Lakes summit to share lessons learned during this emergency. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel scheduled the meeting to focus on protecting the Great Lakes. At the summit Mayor Collins called on the Federal Government to take charge in preserving clean drinking water. He went on to request that President Barack Obama put into effect an executive order that would create new rules protecting Western Lake Erie where the algae has been expanding in recent years.
